Professional improvisational and stand-up comedian, actor, and singer

With decades of experience, Velvet is well regarded as a professional improvisational and stand-up comedian, actor, and singer. In addition to touring his critically acclaimed solo Fringe production Personal Demon Hunter, Velvet performs solo and with The Dandies and OverDude. Over his career, he has shared the stage with iconic Canadian stars. He is also an independent theatre producer and facilitator.

Stand Up Comedy
Velvet Wells is a caramel skinned, velvet voiced queer entertainer from Toronto. A veteran of improvised comedy, he made his stand up debut in 2018 at the Rivoli (Toronto). He is regularly booked with Black Sheep Comedy, Stoned Up Comedy, Comic Sans, and other shows in Southern Ontario.

In addition to solo work, Velvet is the co-founder of the improv comedy troupe The Dandies. The original duo (with Andie Wells) created the popular Star Trek parody show Holodeck Follies. The Dandies have their monthly show at Comedy Bar.
Velvet is the creator of the monthly INTERSECTION, a storytelling comedy show featuring people from all walks of life sharing personal stories.

Musical improvisation
Velvet is the co-founder of OverDude, the two person rock band that plays from their vast back catalogue. OverDude has performed and headlined shows like Comedy Mixtape, $15 Beer Beer, and other shows around Toronto.

He was a co-founder of the improvised musical theatre group Special Features.

Velvet started improvising with Bad Dog Theatre Co. (Theatresports Toronto) in 1988. He joined Theatre on the Edge (TOTE/Theatresports Waterloo) during university, as a regular troupe member, corporate performer, and workshop facilitator.

Velvet graduated from the inaugural Musical Improvisation Conservatory (2013-14) at the Second City Toronto Training Centre, being a lyrical and narrative co-writer/performer of the full length (100 minute) musical Chutes and Corporate Ladders. He also took “The Musical Harold” (2012) with Matt Folliott and “Boomsicle” with Natasha Boomer (2011) at Second City Toronto Training Centre.

Velvet has also trained under Mick Napier, Ken Hall, Carly Heffernan, Ashley Botting, Jerry Schaefer, Ralph MacLeod, Kevin Frank, and Cipha Sound.

Velvet is a member of the Terrible Warriors. He been has a guest of: Break a Wish, Master Race Debaters, Unstable Universes, and The Constant Struggle.

Conventions and Festivals
Through The Dandies, Velvet is a regular performer at Fan Expo Canada and Toronto ComiCon conventions, and has also appeared at Central Canada Comic Con, Con Bravo, Atomic Lollipop and Unplugged Expo.

Velvet performed in the 2019 Black and Funny Festival in Minneapolis as well as the following Toronto festivals: Big City Improv Festival (2016, 2013, 2012), World’s Biggest Improv Festival (2016), Impulse Festival 54-hour Improv Soapathon (2013), Toronto Improv Festival (2012), and Black Swan Ladder Competition (2012, 2011).
