πŸŽ“ MasterClass

Ready to step into a performance experience that’s both intentional and supportive?

The MasterClass is a seasonal, in-person, beginner-friendly workshop where performers bring prepared pieces, present them in front of an audience, and receive focused coaching that deepens presence, refines expression, and builds real confidence.

In this MasterClass, the term β€œperformer” includes singers, speakers, presenters, and anyone who uses their voice. A β€œpiece” may be a song, speech, presentation, pitch, monologue, or other prepared work.

Whether you’re singing, speaking, performing spoken word, comedy, storytelling, or acting, this MasterClass is foranyone ready to engage with their voice and prepared pieces in a meaningful, real-world setting. This isn’t about perfection β€” it’s about choosing to be seen, learning through performance, and discovering what holds under pressure.

✨ Why Choose My MasterClass

The MasterClass exists for moments when you’re ready to step into a true performance container.

Private lessons and personal practice are where skills are built. The MasterClass is where those skills are tested under real conditions β€” in front of others, with presence, focus, and intention.

This format grew out of years of working with performers who felt confident in lessons but hesitant to take their work into the world. The MasterClass offers a supported space to practice being seen, make mistakes safely, and learn that growth doesn’t require perfection.

You bring prepared pieces, perform them in a grounded, intentional setting, and receive coaching that helps you respond, adapt, and deepen your connection to what you’re sharing. It’s about showing up and building confidence through the act of performing itself.

πŸ”„ What Happens in the MasterClass

Each MasterClass is a guided, in-person workshop centered on live performance and coaching.

Performers present prepared pieces in a recital-style setting. One at a time, participants share their work and receive focused coaching from Sensei Carolyn in front of the room. This is a supportive, performance-focused space β€” not a perfection contest.

Each MasterClass features a live musician (pianist or guitarist) who accompanies performers throughout the session. Live musical accompaniment (piano or guitar) is available to all performers.

Observers attend to learn by watching the performances and listening to the coaching process in action. All participants β€” performers and observers β€” must register in advance to attend. Drop-ins are not available.

The session moves through multiple performances with coaching and brief discussion, allowing each performer’s work to be supported within the larger flow of the MasterClass.

βš™οΈ How It Works

The MasterClass is offered at select times throughout the year.

Each MasterClass is a single-session event with a limited number of Performer spots. This ensures there is adequate time and space for each performer to present their pieces and receive focused coaching.

Performers prepare their pieces in advance and bring them into a recital-style setting. Preparation details, format, and timing are outlined in the MasterClass Prep Guide so performers know what to expect and can arrive feeling oriented and ready to participate.

🎢 Musical Accompaniment

Each MasterClass features a live musician (pianist or guitarist).

  • Singers (not self-accompanying)
If you are singing and not accompanying yourself, you must use the featured musician for live musical accompaniment for both of your pieces.
In this case, you are required to bring printed sheet music for the musician.
  • Singers who self-accompany
If you sing and play an instrument, you may accompany yourself.
If you choose, you may also bring a chart so you and the featured musician can perform together.
  • Speakers, presenters, and actors
Live musical accompaniment is optional for speakers, presenters, and actors.
If you choose to work with the featured musician, bring printed sheet music or a chart.
  • Music preparation
Do not email or send sheet music in advance.
Bring all music with you on the day of the MasterClass.
  • Venue notes
    The church has a piano.
Singers may bring their own guitar and amp if needed. The sanctuary has excellent acoustics.

If you’re unsure which category you fall into, the MasterClass Prep Guide will walk you through it step by step.

πŸ‘₯ Ways to Participate

There are two ways to participate in the MasterClass:

🎀 Performer

Performers prepare pieces in advance and present them during the MasterClass. This option is for those who want the full performance experience, including live coaching and the opportunity to work with their pieces in a recital-style setting.

Performers may participate through singing, speaking, spoken word, comedy, storytelling, acting, or any form where the voice is central.

πŸ‘€ Observer

Observers attend the MasterClass without performing. This option allows you to learn by watching the performances and listening to the coaching. At times, observers may be invited to reflect, ask questions, or share observations as part of the discussion.

Many observers find it helpful to bring a pen and notebook to capture insights as they listen.

Performer spots are limited. Observer spots are available where space allows.

Note: All performers and observers must register in advance. For minor performers, one parent or legal guardian may attend as an observer at no additional cost; additional observers must register separately.
