3. Vocal Vocabulary: Essential Terms for Every Singer
Melody:
The melody is the main tune or sequence of notes that you sing or play in a song. It’s the part of the music that you would likely hum or whistle because it stands out and is memorable. Think of it as the “lead” or “storyline” of the music. It’s usually a single line of notes that moves up and down in pitch, creating a tune that’s easy to follow.
Example: If you think of a song like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” the part you sing is the melody.
Harmony:
Harmony happens when two or more different notes are played or sung at the same time as the melody. Instead of being the main tune, harmony adds depth and richness to the music. Harmonies can be higher or lower than the melody, and they blend with the melody to make the music fuller and more interesting.
Example: Imagine if someone is singing the main tune of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and another person sings a different, but complementary, set of notes at the same time—that’s harmony.
Think of the melody as the main character in a story, and the harmony as the supporting characters that add depth and dimension to the scene. The melody tells the story, while the harmony makes it more colorful and engaging!
